BIOGRAPHY

Dramatic colour and texture are key words in describing Marian's artwork, be it her funky sculptural ceramics, or her brightly coloured acrylic paintings. A product of her Celtic Irish heritage, Marian grew up in Waterford on the S.E. coast of Ireland. Her art practice is an exploration into the spiritual energy of the natural world especially ocean life forms and the human inner landscape.Through dramatic colour and deep varied texture she seeks to connect with and celebrate the inherent beauty of that spiritual energy and strives to convey it to others.
Her studies in Theology and Spirituality BTh. Studies Dip.Th., Clinical Pastoral Education and her years of working in Spiritual Care in the Hospital setting have demonstrated and proven to Marian the healing power of Art as a spiritual practice.
Marian completed 2 years of a Visual Arts Degree in Ireland (1972-74) and is currently enrolled in a Visual Arts Major at V.I.U Nanaimo to complete what she began 45 years ago! Marian does commission work and has sold a number of paintings and ceramic pieces. She has works in private collections in Ireland, England, Australia and Canada.

Artist Statement
Through resplendent colour and deep textural markings my paintings and clay work explore the grandeur of God , the creator, the energy or ineffable consciousness reflected in the natural world and within myself. The ocean is ever changing in hue and texture. I am inspired by its mysterious depths from which life emerged. Colour excites me. It gives me joy and I use it thickly and liberally in my acrylic painting to express the myriad moods and diversity of creation. I achieve this with the help of gel and various other paint mediums, palette knife, brush and with my hands.
The malleability of clay and its willingness to be moulded and shaped inspires the the quirky sculptural forms I enjoy creating. Clay, when water is added, comes alive and can be shaped into swirling curves for my sea wave pieces. A relationship grows between the soft clay and my hands, each informing the other on how the work needs to progress. The forms I create often begin on the potters wheel and are further added to and moulded by hand. This gives me freedom to play with the clay, using tools to sculpt and shape.
I am inspired by the flowing forms and deep texture of the work of Denise Romecki, Judy Tavill and Alexandra Engelfriet. Living on Vancouver Island I enjoy all that the ocean has to offer, deep relaxation, meditation healing, inspiration and so much more. Through my artistic creations I invite the viewer into the beauty and deep mystery of the natural world, engendering I hope, a respect and love for our Earthly home.
